So, you want to become a web designer? Lucky for you, this is an exciting time to get your design degree. With a median annual salary of $73,000, multimedia web design is one of the most desirable career paths available today. However, just like any career, entering this industry requires more than just having the right tools. It requires commitment and the skills to stand out. The idea of starting a new career in web design can be overwhelming, so read along to find out what it really takes to become a web designer:

Step 1: Learn the Basics

First, let’s discuss the difference between a web designer and a web developer. A web designer creates the layout and other visual elements of the website with focus on its aesthetics and usability. Whereas web developers will take the web design and actually make a fully functioning website from it… in a nutshell. What is great about this career choice is that you can use an undergraduate degree that is outside the scope of web design and learn the skills necessary to succeed in the field. Having a degree in computer science or having studied the basics will often put you a step ahead. The essential elements to know include programming and graphic based platforms, such as Dreamweaver and WordPress, and an understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. After you checked off the basics, you’re ready for Step #2.

Step 2: Earn A Degree

Web and multimedia design is a very competitive field and successful candidates usually have an education and experience before applying for a job. Although not required, most employers prefer a candidate that has fined tune their skills with a master's in web design program. Because a good web designer needs to be computer savvy and artistic, many degree programs will combine web programming classes with digital media classes which include: database concepts and design, interface design principles, web and application technology, and mobile application development. In addition, candidates with a master's degree will be able to stretch their career path longer giving them more advanced opportunities in the field.

Step 3: Don’t Stop Learning

Step #3 is an extension of Step #2. There are a number of formal concepts that are necessary to be successful in web design long term. A master's degree is pertinent to teaching you those concepts and fine-tuning them in order to apply it in the real world. Even though as a web designer you may not spend much of your day coding with CSS and HTML, understanding them is important for building a workable platform and user experience.

Step 4: Build Your Brand

In order to secure consistent and lucrative work, you must build a positive reputation for yourself. This can be done with an online portfolio, highlighting the skills a web designer needs to use in any work environment. Now that you have built your portfolio, it's time to brand yourself! This means having business cards, attending networking opportunities, and continuing to learn the latest information and trends in the industry. Stay connected by joining organizations or networking with contacts you made on LinkedIn. Furthermore, another perk to attending a graduate school is the advantages you have with their career services department. Colleges, such as Touro Graduate School of Technology, will help prepare you for a career and potentially place you with your first employer!

That’s it! Now you have a basic understanding of what it takes to become a web designer. Oh, and don’t let the idea of graduate school discourage you. Many programs offer a competitive cost, scholarship opportunities, as well as weekend and night classes that help alleviate the stress that most undergraduate programs create.
