Do you think about going to grad school and advancing your career but worried about the time or money? The high cost of an education and a demanding class schedule for graduate school isn’t always true. We at Touro Graduate School of Technology want you to know that you have options. Today you’ll read more about The Mayor’s Graduate Scholar Program (MGSP), which is a way to help full-time New York City employees pursue their educational and career goals. Touro Graduate School of Technology is 1 of the 300 participating colleges for the MGSP. The program was developed to offer New York City government employees the opportunity to compete for scholarships at schools in the metropolitan area.
Here are some things to know if you’re a city employee interested in furthering your education:
1. Program Goals
MGSP is the collaboration between the city and institutions of higher learning in the metropolitan area to assist New York City employees with their educational goals. It started in 1960 and has since expanded to nearly 40 different schools with more than 300 degree programs offered. Degree types include JD, MS, MA, PhD and more. This is a win-win for the city government and its employees as it helps the city obtain better-educated employees while helping employees advance in their career ambitions.
2. Eligibility
Every full-time New York City employee is eligible provided they already have a bachelor’s degree. If you are in the process of completing a bachelor’s degree you may also be eligible for this program, if the degree is completed in the time frame listed on the Program website. Employees may also pursue a second master’s degree if they already have one. More information on eligibility can be found here.
3. Application Process
To apply just submit your application to your agency personnel office by the indicated deadline. The MGSP office will then screen your application. You may apply to as many programs as you want, but you are only allowed to choose one scholarship through MGSP. More information on the application process can be found here.
4. Benefits
Benefits include reduced cost of tuition, developing your skills [in the tech field] and maintaining full employment while pursuing your degree. In addition, you will open yourself up to new promotional and employment opportunities.
