Let’s face it. Composing a resume is an intimidating task with an overwhelming amount of search engine tips. Sometimes, given less attention than required, resume format and composure is an essential step in your career. Like Touro GST, many schools offer advice on how to make a resume. In order to help you get started, TechSpec has reached out to our Director of Career Services, Robert Grosberg, for his professional advice on this topic.

We have outlined a simple step-by-step checklist of key points to help guide you through the process:

Step 1: Use a Resume Template!

Although we commonly put “Efficient in Microsoft” as a skill, we can't always catch when we’re missing information or how to correctly style all the components. Templates give you the backbone and foundation for writing your resume.

Step 2: Make Your Case

This is your lead-in paragraph. You want to utilize this space to make an immediate and favorable impression. This area has a similar goal to your cover letter, however, it is much more clear and brief.

Remember in the early stages of your career, resumes should be kept to one page and one side.

Clearly define your objective by showcasing any contributions you will offer to the employer, the level of responsibility you can handle, and the attribution of your strengths that are pertinent to the position.

Step 3: How Did Your Past Shape Your Future?

In this next section of your resume there will be a composition of your past experiences that correlate with the objective discussed in the lead-in paragraph. Be sure to list your professional experiences which relate to the job role and responsibilities you are applying for. Begin with the more recent and successful experiences, keeping the information concise and coherent. It is important to highlight any major tasks completed and the results, as well as the level of responsibility you’ve held.

Step 4: Stand Out From The Rest

During the composition of your resume, you're encouraged to include any key achievements (as an additional section) to substantiate your strengths. This section allows you to document any awards or achievements, your results, and how they relate to your objective. Begin each achievement with an action word, keeping the flow concise.

Step 5: You Are Prepared Because...

The education component is where you demonstrate that you have the educational background, discipline, and training to fulfill the job role. Your education should be relative to your career objective, listed chronologically starting with the most recent, and include any pertinent non-academic training. This section should highlight your professional and intellectual advantages.

Step 6: Last Thoughts

If you have professional or community activities that are relatable to your objective and enhance your image, you may cover them at the end. These include, but are not limited to, memberships, awards, honors, and certificates.

Step 7: Keep In Mind

• Your resume should provide information the readers need to accurately assess your capabilities and skills.
• Every section should support your career objectives.
• Proofread your resume and use a resume builder for formatting.
• Use professional, current, and business-focused terminology.
