Ten Tips for a Successful Semester Ahead

If you want to do your best this semester, be prepared by creating some healthy planning and study habits. Here are a few ten simple tips to get you started.

Tip #1: Use a planner.

Using a planner will help you stay organized and focused on daily tasks. While some people like to write down their plans using a paper planner, others prefer to keep electronic planners on their phones and devices. Find which method works best for you and use it. Check in with your planner and add to it every day. Having a routine will help you stay up to date on assignments and other commitments.

Tip #2: Find a good study space.

Find a few places that provide you with the right study atmosphere. Some people like quiet when they study, others prefer background noise. Your space may be the library, a coffee shop, your room, or a nearby park. Wherever it is, commit to going there when you need to be most productive.

Tip #3: Create study groups.

Study groups are a fun and dynamic way to learn. Talking through new material with others can help further your understanding of the topic. It is also a great way to meet people with shared interests and make new friends.

Tip #4: Establish relationships with your professors.

Introduce yourself to your professors on the first day of class. This is an easy first step and it will immediately show them that you are a mature, serious student. Also, visit your professors during their office hours. This is a great way to get face time and demonstrate your interest in their class.

Tip #5: Stay on top of things.

Getting behind in coursework can be stressful. Tackle problems head on as they arise. If you are having trouble understanding something, get help immediately. Look over your notes every day after class. Don’t wait until finals week to review your notes for the first time. Study a little bit throughout the semester so finals week won’t turn in “crunch time.”

Tip #6: Establish designated study times.

Set aside times during the day/week when you will fully commit to studying and working on assignments. This will help you stay on track and insure that you are not putting things off until the last minute. By giving yourself a bit more structure, you’ll find that you end up with more free time to do other things.

Tip #7: Join a club.

College is a great opportunity to explore new things, so why not take advantage of that. Find clubs on campus that seem interesting and join up. You’ll widen your circle of friends while learning some interesting new things. If your school doesn’t offer the club you are interested in, start your own.

Tip # 8: Set goals.

Setting and accomplishing goals helps us grow and develop. Set realistic as well as ambitious goals. While taking care of the practical things in your life, always remember to keep striving for bigger things.

Tip #9: Start projects early.

Once assigned something, jump right into it. Starting early gives you time to ask questions and clarify an assignment. Also, starting early gives you time to redo a project if necessary.

Tip #10: Stay positive.

If you are struggling in a class, don’t get discouraged. Never hesitate to ask questions. It shows your professor that you are trying and genuinely want to do well. Remember, challenges allow us to grow; so, grow from the experience and use it to help you in other areas of life. Succeeding when things aren’t easy gives you the strength to face future challenges.
